Virtual Meetup – Juha-Pekka Tolvanen

Abstract

Almost all software development activities require collaboration and language engineering is no exception. First, there is a need for collaboration among language engineers as it is not realistic to expect that one can master all. Second, there is a natural need for collaboration among language users like work and version jointly created models. Finally, there is a need for collaboration among language engineers and language users: Not only when languages are originally designed but more importantly when they are maintained along with the work already created with them.

In this talk, we present the MetaEdit+ tool that enables real-time collaboration for both language engineers and language users. These collaborative features are applied in industrial projects, like creating in the automotive domain a large language (with over 20 integrated languages) by several language engineers. Also, we have applied collaborative features in scenarios where 2 engineers modify the language based on the feedback given by 20 developers using the language at the same time. These collaborative features have been working well and lead almost automatically to better quality languages that meet the users’ needs.
